Swine flu spreads, on the verge of a pandemic

Go anywhere right now, and the topic of conversation is Swine Flu. I first heard about it while watching the news hour about a week ago. Not thinking much of it because it was in Mexico City, I brushed it off and went back to flicking through the channels.

It wasn’t until people started talking about the virus spreading to Canada, that I really started to pay attention.

My mom’s friend recently traveled to Mexico when the whole event was unfolding. So yeah, I was a little freaked when she said she was going to come visit us 2 days after all this was happening…I wanted to say “stay away from me! Don’t give me the Swine!”

I recently read on Rick Mercer’s twitter account a funny little quote: “The real tragedy? If the swine flu becomes a pandemic Canadians may have no choice but to find out who Canada’s Health Minister is.” I had to laugh.

So the question is, do we live in fear? Do we think that anyone around us could have recently traveled to Mexico, picked up some flu and is going to sneeze on us any second? Personally, I am optimistically cautious. I am traveling to Peru on Sunday; I could choose to just stay home, for fear of running into someone coming off of a Mexico flight, but I won’t. (Although maybe I will be picking up one of those masks for the airport layover ☺ )

CONSPIRACY!

What if this is all a well thought out plan from the pharmaceutical companies in hopes of driving money into this so called cure that they already have somewhere? I always have to think about these things. Same goes for Cancer. I’m convinced they must have the cure already with all the funding that comes in, but what would they do if people stopped donating? Horrible thought, I know, but I can’t help but feeling like it’s true.

PIGS are the cause.

I feel kind of bad for the little piggies really. They’re taking all the heat for the outbreak-but I think it’s really our fault. We pump all kinds of stuff into these guys to get them to grow bigger and fatter and leaner for our own greediness, but we should be leaving nature alone! Ok, now I’m just going off on some wacky tangent so I’ll stop.

All I’m saying is that someone (not the pigs) should be held accountable for such an outbreak. Good luck to everyone traveling and let’s hope that it’s not as bad as they’re all saying it is.
