Your computer has crashed and you cannot get back into your operating system. How are you going to get the data back? What Data Recovery options are available? Or what if you simply want to transfer a lot of your files without much hassle?

So what do you do? Perhaps if you are a highly technical person you remove the hard drive, hook it up to another computer, set it as a slave drive and then boot up the new computer. At which point, if everything was done correctly, you copy the data over to your new computer’s drive. It is a long, painstaking process.

Another option is to take it to a computer repair shop like Best Buy’s Geek Squad.

Geek Squad will do all of the work for you. They will rescue the data by removing the drive or using other tools. Of course, they will charge you hundreds of dollars to do it. It could also take 2 weeks or more. Worse, they may end up damaging your computer while doing it. Even worse, they might take some of your private data off of your computer while they are in there.

First, Geek Squad employees do not feel the need to take certain accepted safety precautions when working with a computer. A Best Buy poll of its Geek Squad Employees reveal that over 80% do not bother to wear anti-static wristbands in order to prevent severely damaging static electricity from damaging the inside of the computer they are working on.

Second, many Geek Squad employees appear to treat a customer’s hard drive like their own personal playground. Do you have private pictures or other data you do not wish outside eyes to see? Then do not take your computer to Geek Squad. Don’t just take our word for it, read this signed confession letter from a Geek Squad employee who got caught.

So what are you supposed to do to get that precious data back? Do it yourself! I know it might seem like a scary prospect, but with Selkie Rescue it is as easy as hitting “enter” 3 times. We make data recovery so easy that anyone can do it. Just put the Selkie Live CD into your broken computer’s drive and boot up! It will find your home network and from there you can begin to transfer files to another computer. Don’t have a home network? Not a problem! In our premium product we include a cross-over cable so that you can just hook up a second computer directly to the broken computer and begin transferring files.

Don’t trust a stranger with your valuable data, trust yourself. Use Selkie Rescue Data Recovery.

hi everybody,
there, that’s probably the place we won’t agree. I believe information should not be hidden, period. That is why I think any “tricK”, “solution” etc should be made immediately available to anyone who should find their way to a place such as this on the Internet. But then, way back, I was deep in security, and I saw enough troubles when people thought it nice to hide exploits. Obviously, the not so good guys liked to keep them hidden, so they could exploit it and profit off them, but the good guys did too, a lot, with many excuses, like if they published the exploits, the not so good guys would use them. Then, many sites came along that published exactly what was going on; many companies fixed things faster, then.

Perhaps if many people post obscure ways of talking to devices, manufacturers make it impossible to do without special equipment, and then all can point at people sharing information and say, “Ha ha, it’s your fault!”

But, again, to answer, because, simply, information should be free. That said, no one forces you or anyone else to share, or share publicly. However, why get made when people ask? That they get mad isn’t your problem, is it?

I’m happy to have come here and learn putting hard drives in freezers is a bad idea, so I’m joyous anyway.

I used to build cleanrooms for IBM, and worked in one for a while, beyond the cost of the consumables, I’d agree, its damn expensive even with a portable setup, and the rent on those is prohibitive. It’s got the annoying point that I still wear scrubs and the rubber gloves when I repair a computer (you may laugh, but it does look cool when you answer the door to the postman delivering mobos and he asks if you’re a backstreet doctor)
